It’s February 2026 and PaRappa is suddenly everywhere.

Last month, A$AP Rocky dropped “Punk Rocky” as the lead single off Don’t Be Dumb - cover art directly inspired by PaRappa the Rapper. The album debuted at number one on Billboard 200 and pulled 35.4 million Spotify streams in a single day. This week, WIND AND SEA launched a pop-up at Ikebukuro PARCO for PaRappa’s 30th anniversary, with costumed appearances from PaRappa and PJ Berri. The collection features brand new original artwork from Rodney Greenblat - the artist who created PaRappa’s entire visual world alongside a full run of apparel, accessories, and collectibles.

So you’ve got a number one rap album, a collection pop-up in Tokyo, and OG artwork from the character’s creator. None of that is a new game.

That’s not failure. That’s the point.

PaRappa the Rapper spawned out of Division Zero, an internal team at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan that, in Greenblat’s own words, “just did whatever.” The game was born from a weird, perfect collision of minds - Masaya Matsuura, a Japanese musician who got tired of music videos and turned to game design, teaming up with Greenblat, an American fine artist who had shown at the Whitney Biennial and ran in the same East Village circles as Keith Haring in the 1980s. Together they created a paper thin rapping dog who somehow became one of the most beloved characters in PlayStation history.

The game sold over three million copies and basically invented rhythm gaming - no PaRappa, no Guitar Hero, no Beat Saber, no DDR. For a minute in the late 90s, PaRappa was the closest thing PlayStation had to its own Mario in Japan.

Greenblat has talked about wanting more for the character. More games, more formats, more presence across Sony’s world. He saw PaRappa as something that could represent PlayStation globally - a character built by an American artist and a Japanese musician for an international audience from day one. But after PaRappa the Rapper 2, the franchise went quiet. There was a PSP port, a PS4 remaster, and then not much else for a long time.

The IP didn’t die though. It just ended up somewhere nobody expected.

The most interesting PaRappa moments in 2026 aren’t coming from a console release.

A$AP Rocky didn’t use PaRappa as a nostalgia bit. The “Punk Rocky” artwork was a real creative homage - a commissioned illustration done in Greenblat’s style that hit millions of people who’ve probably never held a PlayStation controller. When a character ends up on the biggest rap debut of the year with zero corporate push behind it, you can’t really call that marketing. PaRappa just has insane aura.

And then there’s WIND AND SEA. This 30th anniversary collection isn’t a one off for them - it’s their fourth collab with PaRappa. They started in 2021 with an initial capsule, did a triple collab with PaRappa and the NBA in 2024, then De La Soul in 2025 - who actually had PaRappa in one of their music videos back in the early 2000s.

The 30th anniversary collection goes the hardest. Greenblat created exclusive new artwork for the key visual. This isn’t just recycled game assets or licensed clip art, but actual new work from the guy who created the character in the first place. How often does that happen in the modern gaming world? The whole thing is drenched in late 90s and early 2000s Japanese energy with the gear referencing old PlayStation packaging and accessories that go crazy deep. I mean we’re talking about a Master Onion obi belt, collectible plush keychains, aurora-finish pouches. Most brands that touch gaming culture treat it like a straight up novelty - throw a character on a tee and call it a collab. WIND AND SEA actually does the homework. You can see it in the DNA of each piece. They’re not just pulling from PaRappa, they’re pulling from the entire era the game came out of. That’s insanely rare for a gaming collab. You don’t make a Master Onion obit belt if you’re just phoning it in.

There’s a pattern forming in how gaming characters stick around the longest. It’s not always through sequels or remasters. Sometimes a character finds its way into the places where people actually show who they are. What they wear, what they listen to, what they hang on their walls. That’s where real legacy gets built, whether or not a publisher is driving it.

PaRappa’s OG catchphrase was “You gotta believe.” Thirty years later, the people who believed hardest weren’t waiting around for a PaRappa 3. They were out in the world doing something about it - making gear, making music, making artwork that kept the character relevant long after the console got unplugged.

PaRappa outgrew gaming. And honestly? That might be the best thing that ever happened to him.

You might’ve missed it between Apex patches and Valorant updates, but Valve’s been quietly cooking something weird since August 2024. It’s called Deadlock, and it’s been hiding in invite-only playtests for over a year - half shooter, half MOBA, half…what the hell is this?

I didn’t read a single line of the tutorial, didn’t Google any builds. Just picked the blue Hellboy-looking guy with a shotgun and a book-Abrams-and jumped straight in.

Ten seconds later, I knew this wasn’t the kind of shooter that wanted me to warm up. It wanted me to learn by getting my ass kicked over and over again.

At first it felt off…like if Overwatch and Smite had a chaotic bastard baby raised by Valve in a secret lab. Third-person camera, floaty movement, weirdly charming jank style….and then I saw glowing orbs popping off minions. My old MOBA instincts kicked in. I started farming.

One quick soul siphon AOE, a shoulder charge that stuns into walls, passive regen, and a 10 second ult where you fly into lower earth orbit and slam dunk enemies into the ground - it all started to make a lot of sense. Then I bought an item called Lifestrike without reading what it did. First fight? Just dropped in, shoulder charge, heavy melee, instant delete. Half their bar gone, mine looking green like I just jumped into the Nickelodeon slime vat. That was the moment it clicked: Deadlock isn’t a shooter pretending to be smart. It’s a smart MOBA pretending to be a shooter.

Valve’s been pretty quiet lately, at least by Valve standards. After CS2 and the eternal DOTA money printer, they finally got back into the lab. Deadlock popped up last year with basically no fanfare, just Valve doing Valve things and dropping a half-finished masterpiece and letting players figure it out.

Is it third-person CS:GO?
Is it a weird fantasy MOBA with guns?
Is it probably something in between?

Yeah I guess it’s technically all of that. Deadlock plays like Smite, Apex Legends, and GunZ: The Duel all at the same time. Six-on-six teams, three lanes, farm troopers for souls, buy items mid-match, blow up Guardians (towers) to unlock more zipline area, then rush the enemy core-the Patron. It shouldn’t work, but through all the noise…you can see there’s a dopamine loop that’s brewing. Classic Valve.

A few months in, I burned out. I was getting clapped by folks who treated every lane rotation like it was their real job on the line. Took a break. Then my crew pulled me back in when new heroes dropped, and I met Victor - a Frankenstein looking menace with a poison aura that hurts everyone, including himself…a burst heal that scales with the damage you’re taking…and an ult that lets him cheat death and stun everyone around him once every few minutes.

I stacked items that healed me when I hurt myself. By late game I’d turned into an unkillable freak - six red health bars surrounding me, popping all cooldowns, and I’m just standing there laughing inside a toxic green cloud while they melt.

I truly think that’s what makes Deadlock special: it really encourages and rewards creative chaos. You’re not just picking a hero here - you’re trying to build a full on extension of your own personality.

But man, matchmaking drives me insane.

When it’s good, Deadlock plays out like a final cut of a movie - two squads perfectly matched. When it’s bad, it’s like someone hosted a time traveling LAN party in fucking space and forgot to invent satellite connections ahead of time. One game’s perfect, the next is lag, teleporting around the map like I’m artifacting through existence while on a PowerPoint file. Valve’s slow burn style of development is fine, but the skill gaps and connection issues need a ton of tightening before launch. Otherwise all this brilliance risks getting drowned in the noise.

Still, I keep coming back for more.
Every time I pin someone into a wall, I remember that first Lifestrike proc - pure satisfaction. Deadlock isn’t trying to be the next Overwatch or Apex. It’s something new entirely: the mashup point where shooters, MOBAs, and…whatever this is, meet.

It’s messy as hell, it’s smart as shit, and if Valve manages to stick the landing, this could be the literal blueprint for an entirely new genre.

UI/UX Ain’t What It Used to Be

Some folks mod textures. Some love that speedrunning angle to recreate weird glitches. And then…some go ahead and redesign the whole damn UI - and they’re kinda going off.

In the past few years, we’ve seen Halo Infinite menus rebuilt like a sleek new machine, Starfield’s awkward loadouts tightened up into what looks like a more efficient EVE online grid, and Hogwarts Legacy’s spell menu swapped up to actually be usable.

UX might be the most underrated aspect of modern gaming.

When I think about older games that I want updates for, it’s usually about gameplay, storytelling, replayability - but not UX. Almost feels like an afterthought sometimes. Great UX definitely ages like fine wine (looking at you Red Dead Redemption radial weapon dial)

Nowadays, we aren’t just consuming UX - we’re remixing, reimagining, and generally tweaking it to be more efficient.

And some of those best upgrades are already sitting on ArtStation + Behance.

Biohazard in a Box: RE5’s Wildest Press Drop

Back in 2009, when Resident Evil 5 released, it came with a wild looking replica Tricell biohazard detection kit. It was super hard to get, only for journalists and insiders at the time.

It came with latex gloves, a surgical mask, replica syringe, instructions on how to “suppress infection”, and even CD’s disguised as diagnostic discs.

As far as I can tell, there was never a public sale, no listing to purchase it - the only images that exist in official collections come from the press when invited to events, Capcom randomly featuring it in a promotion one whole year later after the release, and of course folks trying to sell this collector level grail on eBay.

I miss the days of insane press kit gear - this one is a perfect “weird artifact” category candidate and to me, really represents peak late 00s gaming merch.

🌱 Indie Games

No tutorials. Just consequences.

Indie horror isn’t new. RPG-styled horror isn’t new either.

But the way Fear & Hunger approaches survival? That’s pure insanity. Most games hand you systems and mechanics to move forward - some kind of instruction manual built into the design.

Fear & Hunger laughs at that. Here, survival isn't just hard - it feels like the game actively wants you deleted. Helpful items are nonexistent. Health is fragile. Sanity bleeds away in real time. And if your limbs get hacked off mid-fight? That's permanent. No healing spells. No rewinds. Just you, limping through to the end credits.

Making it through any single encounter with most of your squad intact feels like survival euphoria - that sick little dopamine hit you only get when you survive a game that’s trying to unmake you.

Every loss feels personal. Every win feels stolen. Every story it spits back at you feels cursed.

You really don’t ever beat Fear & Hunger. You just outlast the worst parts of yourself.

In a parallel timeline, the PlayStation might’ve been just another add-on. A CD-ROM sidekick for Nintendo with no identity of its own. But instead, like many a great antihero, it wasn’t the one to rebel first. Nintendo was. Ghosted by its first love, it went solo. And in doing so, it embraced an attitude that was something rare in the world of electronics: a genuine outlaw, out for revenge.

You could almost call the PlayStation a console with detachment issues. Born from a very public breakup between Sony and Nintendo in the early ’90s, the PlayStation was forged in corporate betrayal. At the 1991 CES trade show, Nintendo blindsided Sony by announcing it would be partnering with Philips instead on a CD-ROM hardware feature for their new console (the Nintendo64). It was a pixelated soap opera. Sony, wounded but not defeated, took its prototype home and built the PlayStation from the ashes. The betrayal became the birthmark.

But revenge is best served plugged in. When it finally hit shelves in 1994, the PlayStation didn’t just offer a different kind of machine—it offered a different kind of fantasy. Where Nintendo sold childhood nostalgia and SEGA leaned into speed and attitude, Sony saw the pixelated pubescent dreams of teens becoming twentysomethings. They weren’t being served. The industry was still stuck in a rumpus room. Sony saw the vacuum—and lit a match.

Games for Grown-Ups, and Grown-Ups in Games

PlayStation’s launch wasn’t just technical; it was spiritual. It was a rejection of the old guard. The system's grey, angular design looked like alien tech compared to the playful curves of Nintendo’s consoles. But it was the games that really carved out its outlaw image. Gone were the bouncy plumbers and hedgehogs. In came the criminals, the outcasts, the freaks.

Grand Theft Auto, initially a top-down, chaotic sandbox of crime and nihilism, found its home and audience on PlayStation. Fear Effect, with its cel-shaded noir aesthetic and sexually fluid protagonists, was another slap in the face to the safe, kid-friendly status quo. These weren’t just games—they were provocations. And, naturally, they sparked outrage. American parents in the ’90s clutched their pearls and remote controls, panicked by the idea that digital thievery and pixelated promiscuity were melting their children's minds (which was later debunked). The PlayStation became the poster child for moral panic.

But this rebellion wasn’t just about edge. It was also about expression. Sony’s more open developer policy allowed space for weird, wonderful experiments. LSD: Dream Emulator, for example, was less a game and more a guided hallucination, designed by multimedia artist Osamu Sato. Inspired by his actual dream diary—and possibly a few tab drops—it was part Dadaist art piece, part nightmare simulator. It barely made sense, but it made a statement: the PlayStation was a canvas for the strange, not just a playground for the loud.

This was the seed of the indie explosion, years before it had a name. The PlayStation showed that games didn’t have to be clean, cute, or coherent to matter.

Sex, Drugs, and Loading Screens

PlayStation’s rogue status wasn’t just in the games—it was in the way it sold itself. Its ads in the late ’90s and early 2000s didn’t whisper; they screamed. They weren’t shy about leaning into counterculture, using glitchy visuals, surreal storytelling, and strong suggestions of altered states. Some ads were down right Lynchian: unsettling, cryptic, oozing with subliminal anxiety. Others were punk manifestos in miniature.

One 1999 commercial featured a disembodied female head talking in a bizarre accent while the camera zoomed into her face like a bad acid trip. Another print ad promised: “Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation” next to a man seemingly mid-orgasm. These weren’t just marketing stunts—they were declarations. PlayStation wasn’t here to babysit. It was here to blow your mind.

This wasn’t just iconoclasm for its own sake—it was targeting. Young adults, freshly independent, fresh off the Super Nintendo, were craving entertainment that felt made for them. Sony delivered with ads that flirted with psychedelia, sexuality, and the surreal. It wasn't just a brand—it was a vibe.

From Console to Cultural Collab King

If the ’90s were about burning down the old house, the 2010s were about buying a bigger one and inviting your coolest friends over. As the PlayStation brand matured, it didn’t lose its edge—it stylized it. No longer just a rebellious teenager, it became a taste-making young adult. And like all good influencers, it started collaborating.

PlayStation’s collabs with fashion and lifestyle brands—Nike, Balenciaga, BAPE, even Parisian concept store Colette—weren’t just cash grabs. They were aesthetic extensions of the brand’s outlaw ethos. Streetwear and PlayStation were both rooted in youth rebellion, in curating identity against the mainstream. Whether on a sneaker or a DualShock controller, the PS logo became a symbol of subcultural fluency.

And this wasn’t just marketing synergy. It was legacy. The kids who grew up skipping cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid were now adults buying limited-edition PlayStation x Balenciaga hoodies for the same reason they once bought cheat code books: because it felt like being in on something.

Still Not a Role Model

Now, in a gaming landscape dominated by streaming platforms, algorithmic discoverability, and AI-generated everything, it’s tempting for legacy brands like PlayStation to go corporate. To clean up. To play nice. But if PlayStation wants to remain relevant, it has to stay messy. Stay strange.

The outlaw spirit doesn’t mean always being edgy—it means always being unpredictable. It means continuing to support the oddballs, the dream emulators, the narratives too strange for Netflix. It means finding the new frontier before anyone else realizes it’s there—and making it yours.

In an age of content, PlayStation still has the chance to be culture.

And if that means getting into a little more trouble? Well—good.
